Article from the 12/4/2015 Catalina Islander

Since I became "Catalina's Official Greeter", March 10, 2014, when the Chamber of Commerce assigned me to greet the cruise ships and cross channel boats, I have answered 40,474 questions.
These are some of the more interesting/unusual questions/comments that I have received:
When learning that the flying fish are used for marlin bait, "How can anyone use a fish for bait if it's flying and why would anyone want one that's sewn up?  If it is sewn up, it can't fly!"
While actually in Avalon, "Are there any cars here?"
"Do you ever hire Americans to work here?"
"Do I have to get on a boat for 'parasailing'?"
"Where does the ocean water go during low tides?"

For those of you who weren't among the 200+ family, friends, and fans (Chris Blehm, the high school English teacher, counted them!), from babies to "sages" (sounds a lot better than "Seniors") of my 68 years and beyond, who attended the CIF football finals at Mojave last Friday, this is what you missed:  a 2 1/2  drive each way (longer if you got Highway 58 and Business 58 confused, which I did), 31 degrees (they had a frost warning while the game was going on), paying for round trip boat passage, rental car, gas, meals, hotel, $15 admission to the game, but most of all you MISSED ONE OF THE MOST HISTORICAL VICTORIES IN THE 20 YEARS OF LANCER FOOTBALL!  THEY BEAT LAST YEAR'S CIF CHAMPIONS, THE MOJAVE "MUSTANGS", 50-8, WHICH NOW PLACES OUR LITTLE ISLAND TEAM IN 6TH PLACE, FOR ALL SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH 8 MEN, AND 10TH PLACE, FOR ALL SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH ANY SIZE FOOTBALL TEAMS!!!  Well worth the inconvenience, weather conditions, and costs!  Those of us were using our Christmas and vacation money to personally witness one of the most exciting experiences of our lives.  THE 20 YEAR CURSE HAS BEEN BROKEN!  WE CAN AND DID WIN THE CIF CHAMPIONSHIP!  I was also so moved when I overheard two Junior High students talking and one said to the other, "I can't wait to be big and strong so that I can be on the "Lancer' football team!"  What a wonderful tribute to the 20 years that Avalon has tried to break that winning barrier and has now succeeded!  The following local organizations should be commended for their financial contributions making this event possible:  Catalina SLS, Scuba Dive, Lloyd's, Metropole Café, Steamer Trunk, Sugar Beach, Vons, and I apologize for possibly omitting anyone.
I think we need to pay some sort of fitting tribute, not only to the 2015 team, but ALL of those young men and coaches who gave it their all since 1995!  How about a parade, lead by our local high school marching band, followed by floats/golf carts carrying members from every team since the beginning?  A possible ring presentation (each player on the 2015 team will be receiving a gold ring) in the Casino Theatre?  A tribute to the present and past coaches?  An all-city BBQ at the "Machado Memorial Baseball Field"?  THINK BIG!
I would like to put together a committee made up of coaches, players over the last 20 years, teachers, city leaders, parents, fans, and anyone else who would like to join me.  Just email me atThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  We can then work out a meeting schedule and get this thing rolling.  Once agreed upon we will take the proposal to the Avalon City Council, the Avalon School, the SCI., Co., and anyone else necessary to get this event plan implemented.
We have A LOT to be proud of and a celebration would certainly be a pleasant endeavor considering all of the tough issues that have divided the town of late!
